Staples Mill & Glenside: Weed City

Download the Film

Once home to a single tobacco shop, the Staples Mill and Glenside intersection in Richmond, Virginia has transformed into a concentrated cluster of four cannabis and/or tobacco stores. This film documents that transformation and the absurdity of America's drug policy in real time. In addition to the new tobacco/cannabis suppliers, we are expecting the controversial new Rosie's Gaming Emporium to open in the near future seemingly next to the liquor store.

Filmed entirely on a state-of-the-art iPhone Pro model, this project explores how one overlooked intersection reveals deep contradictions in the War on Drugs, the rise of the cannabis economy, and the failure of prohibition.

Staples Mill & Glenside is a raw, evolving series updated regularly, combining real-time footage, local history, and future speculation—capturing the voice of a changing community.

The film will include interviews with business owners and residents. Participating businesses will receive free promotion and have input into how their stories are told. Interview questions will be provided in advance. Stakes in the production might be available to high impact contributors.
